Stop One of Nine: Copenhagen

A delayed recap but here we go. On a quieter break now, with time to reflect.

Let’s start here. June in Denmark is a delight. June in Copenhagen is even more.

The first thing I noticed about this lovely city was all the green space. Gardens and alleys, allotment plots of vegetables, side of the highway blooming flowers, shady parks full of trees, it’s a city with a lot of nature.

And then, the bicycles. So many bicycles. We arrived in morning rush hour which was only 50% cars.

Already understanding how they pull off being to gosh damn happy. Green spaces and less smog, healthy fit people riding to work through the streets. I accept.

Sailboats? Another yes. Delicious open faced sandwiches and abundant coffee, again more yes.

And it’s tidy. In a way our sprawling gritty cities are not in the US.

As suspected, before we even get to the cultural side and seeing things. The basics of living are all that make me happy.

We had two busy days to walk about and see and do, but first we went to Nyhavn to people watch, load up on coffee and begin our two week romance with smoked fish. Not for all but definitely for me.

PS. Before we go on, as there’s going to be SEVEN countries on this journey, this isn’t abandoning my true land and love of the USA. I can say what I say and we can all agree the diversity, the energy, the opportunity (yes, despite the gloomy times it is possible) and all the different parts, the beauty and the ugly, will always hold my heart. I love to visit green tidy lands but my own messy mess is where I come home to every time and happy for the journey, will never stop looking for the international lion of it all but cows keep me grounded. Cows make sense.
